Bruce Ellington has been hitting the headlines ever since his college football debut got off to a great start with the Gamecocks; their 56-37 win against East Carolina last Saturday made the opponents sit up and take notice of the 5’9” 197-pounder. But his football skills are the only things people are noticing.
During his one-year break from football, he was busy leading his basketball team at South Carolina, ahead in scoring, but what’s really getting talk-time big time is his 73 all-purpose yards in college football and his kick return of over 50 yards, which was called back due to a penalty. Not only that, but he lined up in the wildcat formation and made two tackles on special teams to boot! The former high school quarterback even drew raves from coach Steve Spurrier, who said, “We want to get him in there two or three times a game in the wildcat. We need to get him the ball more.”
Even basketball coach Darrin Horn doesn’t mind his multi-sport skills because his team won 14 games on the court, and that with Bruce Ellington, his starting point guard, nursing a bruised calf all of last season. Coach Spurrier called him “a natural” because he took to the game after the summer with his playbook nearly memorized. The words of his basketball coach says it all, though: “This is not a football-basketball thing. It’s a Bruce Ellington thing and we’re going to support him.” So it looks like college football has a new star in the making, and the basketball coach doesn’t mind at all!
