LSU holds strong against Mississippi

Posted in Sports on 17th September 2011

In the LSU game this week, the No. 3 Tigers’ defense managed to last until the end against No. 25 Mississippi. Fans already knew that the team had great running and defense, but now they’ve seen a quarterback coming to the forefront in the shape of Drew Alleman.

In what has been called a ‘field goal parade’, which was lead by Drew Alleman, the game witnessed kicks one after another, and often-times at crucial moments in the game: like Alleman’s 21-yard field goal in the first quarter, which was a culmination of a 16-play 77-yard drive. Mississippi had their own response to this in the form of a 14-play 57-yard drive ending in Derek DePasquale’s 26-yarder. Leading into halftime, LSU continued to push hard, with Alleman delivering a 42-yard goal with 1:18 left on the clock in the second quarter. This was matched by DePasquale in the third quarter, tying the game at 6 each. Alleman made yet another field goal to give LSU a 9-6 lead with less than two minutes remaining.

LSU was finally able to make a breakthrough with Lee’s touchdown throw that sealed Mississippi’s fate that day. That gave confidence to a small pocket of LSU fans who taunted the rival team by chanting “This is our State,” a marketing campaign by the opposing team.

NFL Power Rankings: Packers in pole position

Posted in Sports on 14th September 2011

NFL power rankings for week 2 of the regular season are out, and by all accounts, it’s the Thursday night performance by the Packers’ offense that put them at the top this week.

Sitting pretty on top of the 32 teams list from the National Football League, they claimed their position after defeating New Orleans Saints in a thrilling game that showed that their defense is not quite as weak as may have been thought. The Chargers come in at second place after their Sunday win. New England Patriots feature next on the list of 32 teams. All talk is naturally about Tom Brady and his touchdowns and receptions; their defense, though requires a lot of work yet, is shaping up nicely under Belichick.

Fourth on the NFL power rankings are the Ravens, and with the team beating the Steelers the way they did, this is definitely a team to watch rankings for over the coming weeks. Close on their heels are the Saints, who missed their chance at glory on Thursday night by just one more yard. As the season heats up this year, the 32 teams have already begun their ‘posturing’, and it seems that they’ll all have to fight hard just to keep, let alone improve, their NFL power rankings standings.
