Chip maker Intel brought out its first Google Android tablet, which sports the Medfield, an upcoming chip to be introduced for smartphones and tablets.
The Medfield Atom chip, which is one of Intel’s most power-efficient chips yet, only has a one-core processor. The first Android tablet to be introduced by the chip manufacturer was on display at a developers’ conference today, and is only a ‘reference design’, one that they will supply to tablet makers to use as a template for developing their own (hopefully) unique shells.
With the slew of tablet makers coming under attack from Apple for copyright infringement on their iPad’s features, Intel’s first Android tablet is likely to have done their due diligence before uncovering their product. If not, then they will likely face the heat as well, once the product is out on the market. Intel has shown a clear direction towards the Android system as opposed to their own MeeGo OS, which was dropped by Nokia in their mobile partnership earlier this year. Two co-managers of Intel phones confirmed that this was indeed the case, with one of them, Dave Whalen, saying: “We were very focused on Nokia. Mike [the other co-manager] and I took over in April and got the company very focused on the Android ecosystem.
