Veteran comedian and star of several popular parody movies, Leslie Nielsen, died in his sleep on Sunday, of complications from Pneumonia at the ripe old age of 84. Fans and colleagues the world over mourn the passing of this mammoth of mirth who starred in over 100 films and 1500 television shows, and played more than 200 characters in his lifetime.
Nielsen, born in 1926 in a small town in Saskatchewan, Canada, near the Arctic Circle, came to New York to find work as an actor, and since then has entertained audiences with his well-received serious roles in movies such as “The Poseidon Adventure”, and later, in spoof films with his inimitable brand of poker-faced hilarity, delivering side-splitting dialogues with a dead-pan expression that left audiences rolling in the aisles.
Arguably the most popular character played by Nielsen is that of Lieutenant Frank Drebin in the Naked Gun movies, with a cast of equally funny co-actors that include Priscilla Presley, ex-wife of rock and roll legend Elvis Presley. Nielsen is no doubt one of the most prolific actors of our time, and he will be sorely missed by fans, friends, the film fraternity and all who knew him and his work.
