HomeWorldThe Pope decries bombings: Pope Benedict XVI speaks out for Christians
Posted in World on 27th December 2010

The Pontiff of the Holy Roman Catholic Church, Pope Benedict XVI, has spoken out strongly against the bombings in various regions in the world. While 38 people died in a bombing in Nigeria, 40 lost their lives in a suicide bombing in Pakistan and several others wounded in the Philippines. Though the Pakistan blast was not an attack in any religious area, the other two bombings were targeted at churches and intended to hurt and kill Christmas shoppers. This prompted the Pope to speak out in outrage.

While speaking at St Peter’s Square, he told pilgrims and tourists that it is sad thing that such incidents have happened around the holiest days of Christians. “I want to express my heartfelt sorrow for the victims of these absurd acts of violence and repeat an appeal to abandon the path of hate and seek instead peaceful solutions to conflicts,” the Pope said.

Pope Benedict XVI spoke out against the needless bloodshed, and also blamed the police for not being able to protect Christians. According to him, Christians are the most targeted religious group in the world today. The Nigeria bombings (four around the city) have been attributed to radical Muslim sect Boko Haram, while the Philippines bombings happened inside a church during Mass. In a simple question, the Pope has probably asked something about the bombings that have been in the minds of the thousands of Christians worldwide, “I cannot understand these attacks. Why Christians?”
