According to research done on 3000 elementary children aged between seven and 13, video game and internet addiction can lead to depression and anxiety.
The study concluded that 9 per cent of the children who were exposed to gaming showed telltale signs of addiction. “Greater amounts of gaming, lower social competence, and greater impulsivity seemed to act as risk factors for becoming pathological gamers, whereas depression, anxiety, social phobias, and lower school performance seemed to act as outcomes of pathological gaming,” concludes the study.
The strange conclusion of the study was that even though the children were addicted to game, the signs of depression and anxiety were visible when they were playing. As soon as the games were taken away from their lives, the problem started reducing.
Criticizing the study, researchers from England have said that this is not a study explaining addiction, but preoccupation. Mark Griffiths, the director of the International Gaming Research Unit at Nottingham Trent University explains in a report, “My own research has shown that excessive video game play is not necessarily addictive play and that many video gamers can play for long periods without there being any negative detrimental effects.”
At this day and age, there is no way that children can be isolated from the internet and video games. A video game can be great company for a child as long as it doesn’t lead to addiction and cause depression and anxiety.
